I am a veterinarian, and I want to maintain high standards in my field.

I was a professor at a vet school, I was on the admissions and interview boards, I have reviewed hundreds of applications. I helped make the decision TO ADMIT applicants.

NAVLE pass rates have been declining significantly throughout the last 10-15 years at virtually ALL schools in the nation. Visit the AVMA site. They provide this information on a school by school basis (accredited, that is- because non-accredited schools do not need to disclose NAVLE pass rates- as they are non-accredited and do not report to the COE, nor are governed by COE standards). And don’t fall for the finger-pointing or the “it was because of COVID“ excuses either. Schools used to aim for 96- 98% pass rates, but if you check their websites they now “boast” that their averages are better than the 80% pass rates (which is the lowest overall pass rate needed to maintain accreditation by the COE). The top vet school in the nation once placed themselves on limited accreditation THEMSELVES because they realized that 80% pass rate was well below their integrity and standards. Thank you #1 vet school in the nation for having high standards to recognize this was a problem!

Fast forward to today, and you will see numerous schools praising their pass rates as being “higher that the 80% average required by the COE”. Higher, as in, this is the lowest common denominator needed to stay accredited.  Great job, universities on achieving the lowest acceptable rate to maintain your accreditation. You make us all proud to be veterinarians. 

So what does an 80% pass rate mean to you?  What that really translates to is that they are willing to allow 20% of you to fail without a second thought, as long as they obtain the bare minimum requirements of 80% to keep accreditation. Aiming for the lowest common denominator is not a standard medical schools should abide by. For me, not only is this an embarrassment to our profession, it is shameful. If their standards are so low when it comes to the pass rates, what other standards are seeking to do the bare minimum? Replacing specialists with non specialist DVMS with no formal training in that specialty? You better believe this is happening on the regular as well. Many times, that ”doctor” who is teaching you is not even a veterinarian! Don’t believe me? Ask them and demand answers. It is more of the norm than you think. 

Why does this bother me? My current clientele consists ENTIRELY of veterinarians who have sat for the NAVLE exam 3,4,5 and even 6 times without successful completion. These are 

veterinarians working in clinics, getting paid $13/hr as technicians, servers at fast food chains, employees at supermarkets and warehouses making $10/hr or less. They ARE DOCTORS!, but for the simple reason they cannot pass the NAVLE, they are not able to practice medicine, nor able to earn a stable enough living to pay back their student loans or earn a decent livable wage. This greatly impacts their mental health, often leading to mental health crises, which is prevalent in our profession as substantiated by our ever increasing suicide rates. I, myself, have had friends and colleagues commit suicide for reasons related to this. The effects of these crises carry over to our profession, colleagues, clients and patients. I have been working to change that, one individual at a time. I am helping to turn their feelings of self doubt, lack of confidence and self worth to show them they can overcome this by providing the support they need to get their lives back on track. This is not an individual problem. Nor is this an issue of their intelligence. This is a systemic problem affecting almost every veterinary school in the nation. This goes beyond borders. 

My clients are from all over the world. They come from non-accredited universities as well as accredited ones. Top universities as well as those that may be considered less than respectable. 

A common complaint I receive from my clients is that once they graduate, they are on their own, completely abandoned by their universities (their words, not mine). I see the merit in their frustration. And for this reason, I try to show them that indeed, there is one person out there that cares enough about them to take the time to give them the tools and knowledge they need so they can finally pass this exam and do what they have always dreamed of doing- practicing medicine AS A VETERINARIAN. My successes outnumber my failures by a landslide, so my efforts seem to be effective. But mostly, my clients feel their self esteem grow even more. They develop a curiosity to learn. And they are excited and eager to keep learning. My goal is that they carry this beyond the exam, and integrate these skills into their respective careers. I want better for the profession, and I can make this happen one veterinarian at a time. The profession deserves it, but so do they. 

If you want packets and packets of hand me down questions- go elsewhere. Anyone and everyone can do that. I offer you the ability to critically think through the questions, break them down, find your gaps in knowledge and fill them with the information you need to get to the answer by working through them together, so that not only are you able to get the correct answer, but you learn something in the process especially the ability to critically think through the questions being asked.
